Hello Friends of Camp Silversides,
“Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name. The Lord has prepared His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules overall. Bless the Lord, oh my soul.” Ps. 103: 1, 17, 22
Are you surprised to get this letter? Did you think we had dropped off the face of the earth? Well, we are still here and are sorry that it has been so long to get a newsletter out to you. We thank you for not forgetting about us and trust that you will not only enjoy catching up on what has gone on at the camp but be encouraged that God is still in control and working, though results are a lot smaller these days.
Covid has not been kind to camps, as you well know. Restrictions have kept us from operating as we normally would, but by God’s enabling we have been able to have some day camps. In the summer of 2020, we had about 120 campers. The summer of 2021 saw 132 campers and 18 counsellors. Three of the counsellors had applied to be teen campers, but willingly accepted working at camp instead of being campers. We regret that due to the nature of day camps we did not have the same spiritual input as in overnight camps and we did not see any decisions for the Lord. But the SEED was planted, and we pray that it will grow and produce fruit.
As you can imagine, rentals have been a challenge too. We did have 20 events at the camp this year, mostly for families and a few groups, including a home-schooling group. They had to arrange for their own meals as we only provided the facility – usually Green Gables or Rose Cottage. One of the events was the family memorial service for one of our beloved and dedicated board members, Otto Ritter.
Staffing has been quite the issue. After 5 wonderful years of directing Camp, Jacquie Hnidey resigned in September 2019. We were sorry to see her go but thank God for the leadership and enthusiasm that she, and her family, had and gave to the Camp. We later hired Tony Baker as Camp Manager and he led the work through the summer of

2020. The Baker family felt the Lord’s leading to move on to other opportunities. We had an interim director from May to September 2021. Katie Lutz is from Rocky Mountain House. She oversaw the camps, did some advertising and did much to update the webpage, and computer files. She is now serving as a missionary in Montana. We are in the process of seeking God’s leading for a Camp Manager and other staff. There is no office staff. Kirk, one of our board members, is handling donations and bookings for rentals. We thank God for each of these people who have served the Lord and the camp during this time.
We are so thankful for those who came for a few workdays and for a couple of fellows who have seen to the maintenance of the camp. We have great board members, and some gave of their time to cook for staff and prepare snacks for day campers. A local lady has been hired to do cleaning after events. God is always faithful to provide help when needed. If you would like to volunteer some time, please give us a call.
One of the projects this summer was to do some upgrades to Rose Cottage. We want to make better use of this facility, since it is self-contained and handicap accessible. We are making it available to families who want a place to get away and enjoy nature – winter or summer. Also, if you know that your pastor needs a quiet retreat for a day or week, suggest that he come to Rose Cottage. We are making this available at no charge for pastors. The board is also thinking about making some seasonal RV sites available for rental.
We are so thankful for the way the Lord has provided financing for the Camp to meet ongoing expenses, in spite of there being few camps and rentals. We thank God for those who faithfully make donations to this work.
As you for the camp and its ministry, here are a few things to pray about:
*Wisdom for the Board members
*That we will be able to open the camp to more age groups this summer.
*For God to send the right Camp Manager to serve our facility
*For God to provide a Facility Manager to help with Retreats and Rentals
*Clarity on how to strategically plan for 1 year, 2 years, 5 years and 10 years
*Guidance on opening 6 seasonal RV sites
*Guidance on creating a budget for 2021/2022.
In closing we, as a board, would like to wish you all a very Blessed Christmas and a fruitful year in 2022.
